I've got some hopes for you. You'll be my first full year as a college grad, in NYC, and out on my own in "the real world".
I'm not typically one for resolutions, but I do think it's important to look inward and pinpoint areas for self-improvement in order to bring about a happier, healthier life. While we should do this continually, the New Year seems a convenient time to start new habits, so here I am, another cliche, offering my resolutions for the new year to my friends and family (only 10 days after the new year because procrastination is on brand for Danny D). I think there's power in making your goals public, and I hope to have a network of support to encourage me and hold me accountable.
Here we go.
1. Transition to a zero/low waste lifestyle. While it's impossible to live completely waste free in today's world, I want to make conscious choices to reduce my footprint. I want to entirely cut out buying packaged (and thereby processed) food by 2018. This means bringing my own bags, buying bulk, buying at farmers markets, and cooking with ingredients I can find unpackaged. It's time for Mr. Mozzarella Sticks and Chicken Tenders to make better, more sustainable choices for him and the environment when it comes to food consumption.
2. Create more. Make videos. Write a play or a blog post. Sing a song. I'll have more creative down time in NYC than I ever did in Ohio, and it's up to me to fill the gaps between shows by creating art that fulfills me. I need to stop waiting for all the stars to align and just create things, as imperfect as they may be.
3. Do one thing a day that scares me. This was a suggestion by my best friend Ogonna, and while it elicited an immediate eye roll from me, she's right. I should work on this. I allow fear to dictate my choices and relationships, and this fear keeps me from opportunities to meet new people and to do new things. Be better, Danny.
4. Stop saying "I don't know" when I'm done explaining something. It's a way of diminishing myself and making myself small. I often "do know" but temper my expectations and goals for the comfort of others. I need to learn how to stand firm in my opinions and in myself because what I have to say is valid and important.
5. Call friends and family more. While I like to think I can get along just fine without talking to other people, relationships are the most important gift. I hope to check in on people and let them know that I care about them more often.
I could list other resolutions, but I'm trying to push myself while also being realistic (that's why going to the gym isn't on this list - HAH).
I hope these changes bring about positive change in my life. Here's to a year with less wasting and self doubt and more creating and relationship-building. Help me along the way.
With love,
Danny D
